The results will be made available through this website shortly.
The Central Learning (Reference) Library (Bishop Street) and the Central Lending Library (Belvoir Street)are currently situated in two different buildings in the city centre. We are amalgamating these two services into one building at Bishop Street. This will
enable the development of a city centre Multi-Access Centre in the existing Central Lending Library. The Multi Access Centre will provide training courses to help people into employment.
The Council wants to ensure that the new combined Central Library provides the services that the city centre needs. We therefore invite you to let us know what you think.
The proposals are:-
As part of the City Council's drive to both modernise its services and to make them more efficient, we would like your views on how the following proposal should be implemented:
The Central Lending Library service and the Central Learning (Reference) Library service will be joined up in one building in the existing Central Learning (Reference) Library site in Town Hall Square.
The Central Lending Library in Belvoir Street will be developed as part of the City Centre Multi-Access Centre supporting local people into work.
The Central Library will include:-
1. A wide-ranging stock of books and other materials for people to borrow or use on site.
2. A range of free to use public computers for customers including access to the internet, government websites, employment opportunities and social networking websites.
3. Informal learning sessions to help with computer skills, learning English and a range of other skills that will help customers in their daily lives.
4. Integrated collection for children and families, with in depth library services for children and young people at local libraries, on the Bookbuses and in children's Centres.
5. Films on DVD and music on CD for hire.
6. Fully accessible building.
7. New services are piloted .
Some things that may change:-
1. The collection of printed music score sets may be relocated to another city library where it would be easier to park and collect large sets.
2. Identify the optimum locations for the provision of books in other languages across the city, to improve the match between our collections and the communities they serve.
The project has a range of benefits:-
- All Central Library services will be under one roof. This will avoid confusion and inconvenience for customers wishing to access all library services.
- Releases funding to improve the Learning & information Library and to turn it into a single multi-functional Central Library.
- Releases funding to enable continued re-investment in the heavily used public access computers that are located in every library in the city.
- Places the Central Library in Town Hall Square very close to other key council services such as the new Customer Service Centre, which will be developed in the old Post Office.
