Consultation: School catchment area review - for admissions from 2013 - 14

This consultation is now closed. Thank you for your interest.

Starts and Finishes

Starts 05/12/2011 Finishes 10/02/2012

Wards Affected:-

City-wide

Why we are doing this?

City Mayor Peter Soulsby asked council officers to review catchment areas to ensure that all children in the city have fair access to a single catchment area school.

The proposals make the links between primary and secondary schools much clearer, so that parents have a better understanding of the paths open to them.

School catchment areas have not been changed since the city became a unitary authority in 1997. The council has closed five secondary schools since then and operated a system of priority and linked areas for school admissions.

The proposals we are putting forward will provide a single primary and secondary catchment school for each address in the city. A small number of changes are also proposed for primary catchment areas.

The council is also consulting on behalf of four schools where the governors carry out the role of admission authority: Babington Community Technology College, Fullhurst Community College, New College and The Samworth Enterprise Academy.

This consultation forms part of the annual consultation on admission arrangements for 2013-14.

Who we are asking?

The council will be seeking the views of parents / carers, schools, the county council and other stakeholders.

Details:-

From 9am on Monday 5th December 2011, until 6pm on Friday 10th February 2012, respondents are invited to answer four questions about the review and to provide us with any further comments.

What will we do with your feedback?

In February 2012 the city council will analyse the views that have been expressed in the consultation and determine the final arrangements for the city council to consider. A final decision will be made by the council in March 2012. The new catchment areas will then be used for admissions for the academic year 2013-14.

Comments received in regard to Babington Community Technology College, Fullhurst Community College, New College and The Samworth Enterprise Academy will be shared with the governors and trustees of each school in order for them to make their own decision about the proposals. The proposals for The Samworth Enterprise Academy will also require the approval of the Secretary of State for Education.
