We asked

In order to deliver and improve sexual health services to younger people, people of African heritage, men who have sex with men, people who are HIV positive, we should ensure that relationships and sex education is relevant for ALL young people as age appropriate; Work with young people to change risky sexual behaviours; provide safer sex messages and information about services; provide a range of ways young people can be tested for STIs and HIV

You said

The majority of responders agreed with all of our proposals . There were further comments eg Testing in isolation can result in missed opportunities to discuss sexual health and Concerns that HIV testing needs to be supported by contract with a service; for MSM and sex workers you thought that 121 work and counselling was the best method of working with people , whilst with people of African heritage it is via clubs and societies.

We did

Ensured that in our tendering all voluntary sector services need to work with the Integrated sexual health service to be able to offer HIV testing; ensured that the specifications for MSM and Sex workers reflects the need for 121 and counselling work and that work with people of African heritage reflects working with Clubs and societies.

There was an initial consultation with current providers and experts in the field including the local voluntary sector organisations that work closely with service users. The output of this was used to write the online and hard copy for public consultation for Leicester Leicestershire and Rutland ,that was live during August.

  • The Public consultation yielded 290 responses, 57% of the responders who stated their gender were female.
  • Although the majority of responders were white there were 17% who stated that they were black African which exceeds the Leicester 2011 census percentage of this racial group.
  • Age : the largest age group answering were aged 16-24 followed by 35-44
  • Faith: the majority of responders stated that their faith was Christian followed by those stating that they had no faith.

The consultation had various sections pertaining to specific groups e.g. HIV  positive people, young people etc. the numbers of responders varied for the varying groups.

Overview

Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland local authorities seek to maintain the good sexual health of their residents through the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV .

We have been working with voluntary and community groups to find out if the services we are considering buying are correct for the needs of the people across the region.

We also held meetings with voluntary sector groups, sexual health experts and people employed and experienced with issues relating to sexual health to help us identify gaps of knowledge and areas of interest in order to put this consultation together.

Why your views matter

The current service provision has been the same for some time, yet the needs of the population has changed due to general changes in the population.  There are also new methods of testing and treating people for STIs and HIV that are now available and we need to ensure what changes need to be made within the current service provision, and what needs to be done in the future in order to ensure we continue to improve peoples sexual health across Leicester City, Leicestershire and Rutland.


This survey does not include anything about clinical services, it excludes the following:

  • Services that your GP provides
  • Services provided in the hospital or community by a doctor or nurse to treat HIV or a sexually transmitted infection
  • Services provided by the Integrated Sexual Health Service that are based at Loughborough or St Peters Leicester
