We asked

We asked what people thought about the proposed change to the mobile meals service, and how people would be affected if change did happen. The consultation proposal was: Stopping the council’s current mobile meals service and helping people to prepare or obtain meals in alternative and more flexible ways.

You said

In general, customers said that they either appreciated, or felt they rely on, the current mobile meals service and wished to continue receiving a hot meal. Several people said that they would prefer this to be through the council as it is now. Some customers recognise that the service needs to change because of the current financial pressures on the council and the availability of alternatives that are now more readily available.

We did

Councillor Rita Patel, the Assistant Mayor for Adult Social Care, approved the recommendation to stop the council’s current mobile meals service and help people to prepare or obtain meals in alternative and more flexible ways. This means in future, depending on their needs, customers could: use a direct payment to meet their needs in the way they choose; receive home care to heat or prepare meals; receive support to order meals provision; receive an alternative hot meal delivery (purchased via a Council contracted provider). The reasons for this decision are: the numbers of people using the service have been reducing significantly; the unit cost of providing each meal has increased significantly as numbers reduce; and we need to make sure that the options available to customers are fit for purpose and offer value for money, which will enable the Council to support people to remain living independently in their own homes.

Proposed changes to the mobile meals service

Why your views matter

We want to find out what people think about the proposed change to the mobile meals service, and how people would be affected if change did happen.

The consultation proposal:  Stopping the council’s current mobile meals service and helping people to prepare or obtain meals in alternative and more flexible ways.

This proposal would mean that people would be able to choose different types of meal options. These options may include:

  •  receiving a visit from a home care assistant, to re-heat a meal or to order food in
  •  receiving a visit from a home care assistant, to help prepare a light meal yourself
  •  having a hot meal brought to you by another company
  •  having a frozen meal brought in
  •  having pre-cooked meals brought in from a supermarket
  • getting help with online shopping.

Please read the leaflet that goes with this questionnaire for more information about the reasons for change.

We particularly want to hear from people who receive mobile meals and their carers. However, anyone is welcome to participate.

People who receive mobile meals and their carers are asked to complete the whole questionnaire.  Otherwise please to straight to question 10.
