Hackney taxis fares consultation 2025

Closed 11 Apr 2025

Opened 27 Mar 2025

Overview

Leicester City Council licenses and regulates taxi and private hire services in the city. As part of this we set the maximum fares which taxis (Hackney Carriages) can charge. These fares reflect the costs of operating a taxi in Leicester, against what it is reasonable for the public to pay for the service.

The council uses a nationally recognised methodology of calculating taxi fares which allows the costs of running a vehicle and providing the service to be recovered over the number of miles licensed vehicles complete. These rates have been designed to ensure that drivers recover their reasonable costs and make a living, whilst also ensuring that customers are not overcharged.

Please note that drivers can choose to charge less than the metered rate if they wish, but are not permitted to charge more.

This public consultation seeks views on the proposed fares. The only change from the current fares is a proposed increase to the night rate from 20p to 30p for every 149 yards.

Consultation responses will be taken into account when determining whether or not to implement the proposals.
