Proposed Changes to Ellesmere College - Statutory Notice

Overview

The council has consulted on changes to Ellesmere College. The consultation opened on 3^rd June 2013 and closed on 14^th July 2013.

Following the outcomes of the consultation, it is proposed to proceed to the next stage which requires the publication of a statutory notice, followed by a six week statutory representations period.

Changes to Ellesmere College (Community Special School)

Notice is given in accordance with section 19(1) of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 that Leicester City Council intends to make a prescribed alteration to Ellesmere College (Community Special School), Ellesmere Road, Leicester, LE3 1BE, with effect from 1^st September 2014.

Ellesmere College is a community special school which currently provides 241 day places for young people with general learning difficulties. An increasing number of students have additional needs such as social, emotional and behavioural difficulties; speech, language and communication difficulties; and autistic spectrum disorder. It is proposed to change the age range of Ellesmere College, from its current age range of 11 - 19, to an age range of 4 - 19. There will be 45 places for primary age pupils.

Note:

The new school building currently under construction on the site of the former Riverside Community College will provide accommodation for 247 students (current capacity 241). The 45 primary places will be within the 247 capacity. The new school site will be accessed from Braunstone Lane East. The capital costs of the new school building will be met by Leicester City Council from the Building Schools for the Future budget.

What happens next

At the end of the representation period, a further decision will need to be taken by the council as to whether to implement the proposals for each school or not.
