Castle Mead School Street - Parent Survey
Overview
Leicester City Council have been working with pupils who have raised concerns about traffic and parking around Castle Mead Academy during school run times.
We are now seeking your views on a proposal to trial a School Street (locally referred to as a Clean Air Zone) to help reduce congestion and improve safety at the start and end of the school day.
The school previously trialled a School Street on Richard III Road for Clean Air Day in 2025, and the closure was well received, particularly by pupils.
Despite ongoing engagement, issues with parking and traffic continue in the surrounding streets. We therefore propose introducing a School Street every school day on an experimental basis. This would allow us to adjust the timings or extent of the scheme, or remove it if necessary.
We have monitored traffic levels and parking patterns in nearby streets to understand current behaviour and to help us respond if traffic is displaced elsewhere.
The proposed School Street would operate on Richard III Road during school arrival and departure times, restricting access for most motor vehicles while still allowing residents, blue badge holders, and essential services to enter.
We would like to hear your views on any issues you experience during the school run and your thoughts on the proposed Clean Air Zone trial.

A map showing the proposed school street scheme for St John the Baptist school. It includes the extent of the school streets, the marshalled entry points, the current pedestrian crossing and the proposed single yellow line.
Why your views matter
If the feedback from the online survey is supportive, we plan to start a trial School Street lasting up to 18 months. During this trial, residents and parents can share their thoughts, suggest changes, or ask for the scheme to be removed.
