Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How much is a resident’s permit?
A resident’s permit costs £35* a year.
Who can buy permits?
Each resident driver who has a car registered to their address in the area can buy one permit per vehicle. Residents in properties with off-street parking would still be eligible for permits. Any future new developments or conversions to more than one dwelling would be subject to planning conditions in relation to whether or not they would be eligible for parking permits.
Is there a limit on the number of permits per household?
The number of permits per household will be determined based on the outcome of this consultation and the on–street car parking capacity. In most of the rest of the city there is currently a limit of four permits per household. Each resident driver must have their own car registered to the address.
Does a permit guarantee me a parking place outside my home?
No, a parking place is not guaranteed outside your home, nor in the wider residents’ parking area. However, the lack of commuters will make it more likely that you will find a parking place.
Will the number of parking places on street increase?
There will not be any extra parking spaces on street, but the lack of commuters should make it easier for residents and visitors to find a space.
What about my visitors?
Residents, regardless of whether they have a car, can buy a digital Annual Visitor permit for £40* that lasts for 12 months, or 24-hour** visitor permits in advance in the form of digital permits costing £2* each for a consecutive period of 24 hours.
▪ Visitor permits are limited to 30 per household per month.
▪ Residents over state pension age can obtain an Annual Visitor permit free of charge.
▪ Residents who require regular carer attendance can obtain the Annual Visitor permit free of charge.
I’m disabled and a Blue Badge holder. How will I be affected?
Vehicles displaying a valid blue badge will be able to park in areas designated for residents’ parking, or in pay and display bays or in the limited waiting bays (no time restriction if Blue Badge displayed).
Under a Residents Parking Scheme, an Advisory Disabled Bay cannot be introduced or remarked. Resident Blue Badge holders with a car can apply for a free resident’s permit.
I need regular carer attendance. Can my carer get a permit?
A resident can apply for a free carer permit (in the form of the Annual Visitor permit) subject to certain conditions (limited to one per household).
I run a business in the area. Do I need a permit?
Yes. Permits for vehicles essential to the running of your business will be available at a cost of £100* per permit per year for a permit that is tied to a particular vehicle, or £150* for a general permit that can be transferred between vehicles. There is a limit of four business permits per business.
What about visitors to businesses in the area?
Limited waiting parking bays will be available close to shops & businesses in the area where shoppers & other visitors can park.
How are parking bays enforced?
Parking bays are enforced by our Civil Enforcement Officers patrolling the area. Any vehicles that contravene the signed and marked rules might be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.
