We asked

The community of Leicester and other stakeholders to look at the Issues and Options document to suggest any issues that should be addressed, comment on which options are most appropriate, or tell us about any other options they have. Consultation ran from 15th October 2014 to the 31st January 2015 and marked the start of the process of preparing the new Local Plan.

You said

In total 93 responses were received from statutory consultees, community groups and members of the public during the consultation period. Comments were made on a wide range of themes. Particular issues raised included; • The redevelopment of brownfield land should be prioritised but it was generally acknowledged that this won’t meet all the need. • There should be more affordable housing and housing for families, older people and the disabled. • Improve public transport and provide better quality and continuous walking/cycling routes that are well signed and attractive. • Local communities should have good access to local services and employment. • It is important not only to retain open green space but improve the overall quality. • More public sector sports facilities are required and the creation of community and sports hubs is supported. • It is important to preserve the city’s heritage, but not compromise growth within the city.

We did

We are now in the process of analysing the responses received in more detail which will be considered in line with national guidance to help us draft the Consultation Local Plan. This plan will replace the 2006 Local Plan and the 2014 Core Strategy and will set out a vision and objectives for the growth of the city over the next 15 years. It will outline how the council will respond to local priorities and how it will meet the social, economic and environmental challenges and opportunities that face the city. It will also identify broad locations, scale and type of development and supporting infrastructure that will be required in the city. Consultation on the draft Local Plan is expected to take place between October and November 2015.

Overview

The City Council has begun preparation of a new Leicester Local Plan which will set out a vision and objectives for the growth of the city over the next 15 years.

The new Local Plan will replace the 2006 Local Plan and the 2014 Core Strategy. It will set out how the council will respond to local priorities and how it will meet the social, economic and environmental challenges and opportunities that face the city. It will identify broad locations, scale and type of development and supporting infrastructure that will be required in the city.

The Issues and Options consultation stage marks the start of the process for the new local plan. It will provide the community of Leicester and other stakeholders with the opportunity to suggest any issues that they feel should be addressed, comment on which options they think are most appropriate, or tell us about any other options that they may have.

We have an opportunity to further improve the quality of life in Leicester and make the most of what is special and unique about our city.

It is your city and we want you to help us shape its future development so have a look at the ideas in this document and tell us what you think the big issues are.

Public consultation on Issues and Options will begin on Wednesday 15th October and will end on 31st January 2015.
