We asked for your views on the proposed revision to the boundary of the Church Gate Conservation area as well as comments on the proposed revised character appraisal and new standalone management plan.

You Said

While there was some feeling that the heritage designation was a hindrance, there was broad support for the conservation area and the continued protection of buildings in the area through the conservation area status. No adverse comments were made regarding the conservation area boundary changes. Support was also expressed for improved cycle infrastructure within the area.

We Did

The boundary of the conservation area was amended in line with the consultation documents. The Character Appraisal and Management Plan were amended in line with comments received and have been adopted. Comments relating to cycle infrastructure have been passed to the relevant team in highways.

Overview

Leicester City Council is asking for the public’s views of plans for the Church Gate Conservation Area.

The site within Castle Ward was first designated in 2006 and contains some of Leicester’s most important historic buildings, views, streets and spaces.

 

Why We Are Consulting

The council are required to periodically carry out assessments of the current state of the city’s conservation areas, and due to the recent burst of activity and development, the Church Gate Conservation Area has been selected for review.

A draft Appraisal and Management Plan document have been produced and are available to download as part of this consultation.

These documents aim to define and record the special architectural and historical interest of the areas, and present proposals and actions that seek to guide and manage future change, enhancement and preservation of the sites, including changes to the Conservation Areas boundary.
