Self-Build and Custom Build Register

Closes 30 Apr 2017

Opened 1 Apr 2016

Overview

The Self-build and Custom Housebuilding (Register) Regulations 2016 made under the 2015 Act came into force on 1 April 2016. The Regulations place a duty on the Council to keep a register of individuals/associations of individuals who wish to acquire serviced plots of land to bring forward self-build and custom house building projects.

What is self-build and custom build?
Self-build housing usually means that you are directly involved in organising the design and construction of your new home. Custom build usually means working with a specialist developer to help you deliver your home. There may be some overlap between the two – for example some custom build developers offer the option of a serviced plot where you can design and build your own home as part of a larger scheme.

Registering your interest in self and custom build
If you are interested in building your own home, please sign up to our self-build and custom build register - click on Online Survey below. By signing up you will help us find out more about the number and types of houses people would like to build in our area, so that we can better plan and provide for this demand through our Local Plan.
Please note that being on the register does not guarantee a plot of land will be found. We will not pass identifiable information from the Register onto anyone outside the Council without the written consent of the person who registered their details.

Additional information can be found on self and custom build homes at the self-build portal (http://www.selfbuildportal.org.uk/)

Should you require any further information please contact the Planning Policy Team at:  planning.policy@leicester.gov.uk.

Why We Are Consulting

What is the purpose of the register?

The Government wants to enable more people to build or commission their own home. This register will provide an indication of the demand for self/custom build in Leicester and allow the Council to develop its housing and planning policies to support the kinds of self and custom build projects that would be most appropriate.
The Council is currently working on the new Local Plan for the city and plans to adopt it by late 2017.
