We asked

We consulted on two proposed changes to the School Admissions arrangements 2014/15: 1. Removal of permanent waiting lists 2. An additional ‘fourth preference’ for the catchment area school for those applicants who did not include it on their admissions application. Parents would have the option of opting out of the fourth preference.

The consultation closed on 28 February 2015. A total of 35 consultation responses were received. There was a slight majority against the first proposal to remove permanent waiting lists and a substantial majority in favour of the second to add a fourth preference for the catchment area school.

We did

In the light of recent experience in dealing with unprecedented levels of new arrivals to Leicester seeking school places, we decided to reject the proposal to remove permanent waiting lists. The Authority adopted the second proposal to provide a fourth option of applying for a catchment school where the first three preferences do not include the catchment school. Another change in school admission arrangements is that parents have the right to request that their child be educated out of their normal school year group. This has been included in our admissions arrangements for 2016/17.

Overview

Leicester City Council is proposing some changes to the admissions policy of community and voluntary controlled schools in the city for September 2016. We would like your views on these proposals.

Why your views matter

Leicester City Council is the admission authority for community and voluntary controlled schools in the city and is required to consult on any changes to its oversubscription criteria or admission arrangements.

The proposed changes are outlined in the online survey where there is space for you to comment, and a more detailed description of the proposals can be found in the attached consultation document.  The School admissions code also requires that any consultation should include the schools' published admission numbers, and these are also attached.

As the proposed changes alter the admissions scheme for Leicester city, the scheme has been updated to reflect these changes and therefore will form part of the consultation. The amended admission scheme is also attached.
